3 ways in which Chesterfield sofas can be used to create focal areas

One thing that you will notice about professional interior designers is they always set a main focal point when designing living rooms. The reasoning behind focal points is quite simple, and that’s to create a point of interest that immediately draws people’s attention. Some people set a focal point purely to distract from aspects of their living room that they don’t like.

For example, if someone isn’t too keen on their flooring, they might place a large piece of wall art on the wall to ensure that people focus more on the art piece than their flooring. Because of their beautiful domineering appearance, Chesterfield sofas have been used as focal points for over 100 years. In fact, they have been used to create focal points in stately homes and legal offices since they were first manufactured.

In the last 20 years, they have become increasingly popular in all kinds of properties both small and large. In this article, we will highlight a number of ways in which you can use your Chesterfield sofa to create a focal point.

Create a conversational area using two Chesterfields and a coffee table

This is great for when your guests come around. Place a coffee table in the middle of your lounge and then position two Chesterfields either side of it but facing each other. This creates a solid focal point that adds character to your living room. If you have a fireplace opposite, then the look that this creates is stunning. If you have a smaller living room, you can achieve this look with two Chesterfield club chairs. Another way that this look can be achieved is to place one Chesterfield sofa on one side of the table, and two high back Chesterfields facing inwards on the other side. This makes for a very simple, yet functional focal area.

Creating a focal area in a small rectangular living room

In apartments with small rectangular living rooms, you often see one sofa that is positioned in the middle of the room, directly opposite the television. This is because this is one of the very few ways to position a sofa in a room that isn’t big enough to accommodate two sofas. Position your sofa flush against the wall in the middle of the room and place a tall lamp on one side and a table with a lamp on the other side. What this does is provides the room with adequate lighting while showcasing the area where your Chesterfield is positioned. To reflect light and make your living room seem large than it is, place a large mirror directly above the Chesterfield.

Place two Chesterfields at angles to turn the centre of your living room into the main focal area

This works especially well if you have a really nice rug that you would like to showcase. By placing two Chesterfields on an angle, it subconsciously directs people’s attention where they are facing. For example, when sofas are on an angle, it’s usually so that the TV can be viewed better. In this case, the aim is to showcase the centre of your room and place emphasis on the large open space. This works particularly well if you want to maximise the amount of space available in your living room. As mentioned above, having a rug to showcase will make this arrangement even more effective. Because of the Victorian style of Chesterfield sofas, a rug that features Victorian patterns would look great.
