The wonderful heritage of Chesterfield sofas and what to consider when buying one

With an abundance of character, charm and style, the Chesterfield Sofa has become synonymous with comfort and quality. There are very few leather sofas that can come close to the Chesterfield in terms of its rich and fascinating heritage.

The origins of the Chesterfield Sofa are not 100% confirmed, however it’s widely believed that the first leather sofa of its kind (a tufted leather sofa) was originally commissioned in the 18th century by the Fourth Earl of Chesterfield, Philip Stanhope. Others believe that it was named after Chesterfield, a small market town in Yorkshire. Whatever the origins of the Chesterfield Sofa, it’s a true classic that symbolises traditional English craftsmanship.

History and a variety of old paintings reveal that Chesterfield Sofas have been commonly used in stately homes, government buildings and old institutions for generations. Because Chesterfield Sofas were handmade by highly skilled craftsman, they were priced rather expensively and as such, were only available to the wealthy.

It is widely believed that the Earl asked a local craftsman to build a furniture piece that would allow gentleman to comfortably sit upright without wrinkling the garment. This was the primary purpose of the wonderful Chesterfield sofa with its characteristic deep buttons and rolled arms.

Chesterfield sofas can be distinguished from similar alternatives by their thickly padded seats, arms and back. They vary in colour but are typically made using a high quality grain of leather.

Considerations to make when choosing a Chesterfield Sofa

Buying a new leather sofa is always a stressful task. You go from website to website and furniture store to furniture store trying to find the perfect sofa. Not only does it need to be the right size and colour, but it also needs to be made to a very high standard.

Below are a number of considerations to make when buying a Chesterfield Sofa:

Comfort should always come first

When choosing a Chesterfield sofa, comfort should be a deciding factor. The reason being is that your sofa is a furniture piece that you will be using on a daily basis. Whether you’re watching television or reading your favourite book, a comfortable leather sofa will make a world of difference. While many leather sofa manufacturers use low-grade foam, all of our Chesterfield sofas feature Injection-moulded foam seat cushions and-studded front facings for added comfort.

Choosing a colour

Gone are the days when Chesterfield sofas were only available in one or two colours, these days they are available in a plethora of colours. The colour you choose will largely be dependent on the overall style and décor of the room it’s placed in. While brown Chesterfield sofas work well in pretty much any décor style, some of the other colours are more suitable for certain designs than others.

Black leather sofas, for instance, are great if your household is prone to stains. Tan Chesterfield sofas, on the other hand, are ideal for creating minimalist atmosphere in a contemporary home.  Our Chesterfield sofas are available in four antique colours, all of which can be adapted to work in harmony with other colours.

How well is the sofa constructed?

Choosing a Chesterfield sofa that has been produced using the best materials is hugely important. The quality and durability is largely dependent on the frame around which the Chesterfield is constructed. The frame needs to be able to withstand all the stresses of everyday use. We are committed to providing the highest quality Chesterfield Sofas, this is why all of our frames are hand assembled using the best quality hardwoods.
