Classic British Décor

While classic British décor is notoriously difficult to define, it can be relatively obvious to identify. Unstated elegance, floral fabrics and beautiful hand-crafted Chesterfield Sofas all spring to mind when you think of classic British interiors. In this article, we will highlight five hallmarks of classic British interiors.

The Chesterfield sofa

The Chesterfield epitomises everything that’s wonderful about British design. With its scrolled arms, deep buttoned upholstery and timeless charm, it’s hardly surprising that it has become such an iconic piece of furniture in so many countries throughout the world. Nobody is hundred percent sure as to when the first Chesterfield was made, but myth has it that it was commissioned by the 14th Earl of Chesterfield, Sir Phillip Stanhope.

It is believed that Stanhope asked his local craftsmen to create a piece of furniture that would allow gentlemen to sit comfortably without creasing their garments. We believe it’s a testament to the timelessness of the brown Chesterfield sofa that it still remains as popular as ever after all these years. A large floral influence

Nothing speaks traditional British décor like flowers do, scattered vases filled with fresh flowers are a common design choice in traditional British homes. The love for flowers doesn’t stop there, though! Classic British interiors continue the theme by featuring old floral paintings in ornate frames, hanging old plates with floral patterns on the walls, and sometimes incorporating floral patterns in the form of rugs. In short, classic British décor likes to create as much as a floral influence as possible.

Heavy use of dark brown wood

Wood is a key design feature in traditional British interiors and is often used either as panelling on the walls, or for flooring. When we say wood, we mean real wood that is 100% natural. In a traditional British cottage, expect to see old wooden beams, solid wooden tables and an array of tasteful wooden accessories. Most of these items wood of been handmade, so their quality is generally higher than many of today’s mass produced furniture pieces. Intricate wooden carvings are particularly common in this style. The look that this creates is one of charm, warmth and character.

Plenty of antique’s

No classic British interior is complete without antiques. Antiques are an integral part of classic British décor as not only do they take people on a journey back through time, but they also help to create a mirrors or furniture. In general, the majority of these items are truly authentic classic feel. These antiques are anything from old floral vases, to granddad clocks, quite hard to find, which is exactly why creating a classic British interior is seen as a hobby so many people.

Plenty of ornaments

Ornaments play an integral role in British design. They are and always have been, a wonderful way for homeowners to express their personal tastes and interests. In most classic British interiors, expect to see ornaments displayed either on the fireplace, on wall mounted shelves, or in large antique cabinets.
